CMR Surgical Creates ‘Versius’ to Revolutionise Surgery Worldwide

CMR Surgical, a UK-based medical device company, has developed a universal robotic system for minimal access surgery. The company’s offering, ‘Versius’, is a next-generation robotic device designed to enable surgeons to perform more minimal access surgery so that more patients can have access to the highest quality of surgical care.

CMR Surgical was founded in 2014 by its five founders, including CEO Per Vegard Nerseth, who has over 25 years of significant global growth and business scaling experience in the field of robotics. The company’s main ambition is to change minimal access surgery and make it easily accessible to more patients. By achieving these goals, the company hopes that it will empower surgeons to transform how surgery is performed across the world.

Currently, ‘Versius’ is being used in routine clinical practice to deliver high-quality surgical care. It has a small, lightweight, and modular design that can be moved effortlessly between departments to help hospitals maximise its utilisation. The small-scale design, enabled by unique v-wrist technology, means that it is suitable for virtually any operating room. The device is capable of working seamlessly and safely among the team, while integrating with the existing workflow. Every ‘Versius’ console comes with a trainer unit, giving surgeons the opportunity to immerse themselves in a virtual environment. Furthermore, the device captures data for its wider digital ecosystem to support the surgeons in their work.

With over 5,000 surgeries performed using ‘Versius’ globally, the device is routinely used by surgeons across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia & Latin America. CMR Surgical announced $600 million in Series D financing in June 2021, led by SoftBank Vision Fund and co-led by Ally Bridge Group. The company stated that this funding will support their mission to make keyhole surgery accessible to more people worldwide. The funds will be used to increase the global commercialisation of ‘Versius’ and further develop its digital ecosystem.
