French Company Develop Purifying Houseplant to Reverse Environmental Damage

French company Neoplants has launched a bioengineered plant called Neo P1, which has been engineered to fight back against air pollution. Bioengineered by a team of 20 scientists, the device works by capturing and recycling dangerous indoor pollutants.

Neo P1 targets the 4 main VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that are emitted by solvents and varnishes used in most furnishings, textiles, cleaning and personal hygiene products. Neo P1 is able to turn VOCs into water, sugars, amino acids and oxygen. The plant is about 30 times more powerful than most depolluting houseplants.

The company was established in 2018 by two co-founders, Patrick Torbey and Lionel Mora. Torbey studied at Université de Paris before obtaining his PhD in Genetics at Ecole Normale Supérieure. Mora holds a MSC in Strategy and Marketing from EMLyon Business School. Both creators founded Neoplants with the mission to put nature at the heart of innovation to drive positive change.

The plant’s shell is designed to allow maximum air intake. It captures and recycles air pollutants — such as benzene and xylene — making a cleaner and healthier environment. The shell is produced from renewable resources and is biodegradable. It only needs to be watered once every three weeks in winter and once every two weeks in summer.

Not only do Neoplants give back to the environment, they also give back $20 for every Neo P1 they sell into research and development for climate change. The company strongly believes that the only way to solve the urgent issue of climate change is through biology. Neoplant’s offering shows huge potential for fighting climate change with nature.

Lionel Mora, Neoplants CEO and co-founder, said, “for too long, the advance of technology has been at the expense of our environment. Our team views nature as the world’s most powerful technology. It is critical that we use human talent for innovation to partner with, and enhance, our natural world rather than consuming it.”
