Government Supports Proposal to Host the Einstein Telescope in Italy

The Italian Government fully supports the bid to host the Einstein Telescope (‘ET’), a future gravitational-wave observatory, at the Sos Enattos site in Sardinia.

Italy and the Netherlands are currently the two candidate countries to host the Einstein Telescope. In Italy, the Sardinia Region has declared its interest and readiness to host the ET project, undertaking to support its implementation with EUR 350 million, while the Ministry for Southern Italy and Territorial Cohesion will support the research infrastructure using resources from the 2021-2027 ‘Development and Cohesion Fund’ (‘Fondo per lo Sviluppo e la Coesione’ – ‘FSC’). Considering the time frames to complete the project, with construction work set to begin in 2027, additional resources may be found within the State budget.

The President of the Council of Ministers, Mario Draghi, has invited the National Institute for Nuclear Physics to produce Italy’s candidature dossier, in collaboration with all national and local partners, with the final choice for the site to be made by 2025.
