Wolt is a Helsinki-based technology company known for last-mile delivery, specialising in food delivery and merchandise. The company’s platform allows customers to order whatever they need in one app, for merchants to make additional sales and for couriers to make meaningful earnings flexibly. Wolt has developed a wide range of technologies, from local logistics to retail software and financial solutions.
The company was established in 2014 by six founders, with the mission of building new infrastructure. The goal was to build a global platform for local commerce that connects consumers with the best of their community, drives revenue for merchants, and provides meaningful earning opportunities for millions. Wolt’s team now consists of over 4,000 employees and operates a leading local commerce platform across 23 countries, serving over 20 million customers.
Wolt has joined forces with US-based company Doordash (American food delivery company), which share the same goal of building a global platform for local commerce. Wolts co-founder and CEO Miki Kuusi became Head of International at Doordash after the deal was completed in May 2022.
Tony Xu, co-founder and CEO of Doordash, commented on this opportunity, stating, “under the leadership of Miki Kuusi, Wolt has built a culture of optimism, operational rigour, and bias for action that matches our own. By joining forces, we believe we will accelerate our product development, bring greater focus to each of our markets, and improve the value we provide to consumers, merchants, as well as Dashers and couriers around the world.”
In November 2022, Wolt announced its plans to ramp up its product development by launching two new technology hubs in Tel Aviv and Stockholm. Now looking to speed up its tech recruitment, as well as build more specialised teams from different fields, including software engineers and product managers. Until now, the company has two bigger technology hubs, one located in Helsinki and one in Berlin.
Niilo Säämänen, Chief Technology Officer at Wolt, stated that deciding the location of these two hubs was easy, saying, “some of the most talented people in technology live in Stockholm and Tel Aviv. We believe we have plenty of exciting opportunities to offer, as both hubs will play an important role in tackling the delivery of everything at scale, unlocking the potential of our newer business lines, and most importantly in making the service better for our existing customers and partners.”
