BioMarin Tops LinkedIn List of Best Places to Work in Ireland

AstraZeneca, the British-Swedish pharmaceutical giant, and ServiceNow, the US-based software provider, took the second and third spots respectively as pharma and biotech dominated the list.

LinkedIn’s annual ranking of top employers in Ireland has crowned BioMarin Pharmaceutical as the number one company to work for.

Based in San Rafael, California, BioMarin is a leading global biotech firm established in 1997, specializing in enzyme replacement therapies. Climbing from eighth place last year, BioMarin secured the top position thanks to its excellent blend of career advancement, skill development opportunities, and job security.

Last month marked the anniversary of BioMarin’s expansion of its Shanbally manufacturing facility in Co Cork, where it has operated for over ten years. With a €38m investment, the company significantly boosted its production capacity, supporting its workforce of over 500 employees in Ireland.

Following BioMarin, AstraZeneca, the British-Swedish pharmaceutical powerhouse, and ServiceNow, a US-based global software company, claimed the second and third spots, respectively. Both firms have recently ramped up their investments in Ireland.

Last October, AstraZeneca appointed Alex Wilkes as its Ireland Country President. The company also revealed plans last year to pump €65m into expanding its manufacturing and R&D operations in Ireland, building on its earlier 2021 announcement of a major investment in a new Dublin-based manufacturing facility.

On the other hand, ServiceNow declared the addition of 400 new positions at its Dublin location last June. These roles, to be filled over the next three years, span across digital sales, engineering, and R&D teams.

This year’s rankings showed a strong presence of pharma and medtech firms, with 13 out of 25 companies hailing from these sectors, up from nine last year. Gilead Sciences, a biotech research company, topped last year’s list but slipped to tenth place in this year’s rankings released on April 16th.

Polly Dennison, news editor at LinkedIn, said, “The 25 companies on the list are helping to shape the future of work in Ireland, cultivating workplaces where staff can thrive, thanks to investment in professional development, innovative work practices and an environment where diversity and inclusion are celebrated. They are setting the bar high and reaping the reward in terms of being able to attract and retain the best talent.

“BioMarin’s achievement of securing the top slot … reflects the investment that the company is making in its people. The biopharma sector has grown in popularity over recent years among prospective employees, with the sense of purpose in helping to treat people proving to be a highly motivating factor.”
