London Inventor’s ‘Entropy Vest’ Evolves Its State Of Matter To Keep You Warm

Beat the winter chill with this new vest that rethinks how people stay warm during the colder months.

The ‘Entropy Vest’ was designed by Petit Pli, an innovative clothing company that marries technology and science with fashion. Previously, it released a line of unisex clothes that could fit any body shape. Now, the firm is setting its sights on the brisk and chilly winters by creating a vest that utilizes a chemical gel to warm its wearer.

The gel is housed in a translucent vest, and instead of keeping it hidden from view, it has been made part of the aesthetic as webs of the gel can be seen running through the vest like a spider’s web. This unique heating substance is a Phase Change Material that can warm up to 104°F when activated. This is noted by its liquid structure solidifying into what founder Ryan Mario Yasin describes as a “comfortable gel,” according to Fast Company.

Unlike other heated clothing or blankets that might be plugged in to give users some warm relief, Entropy relies solely on its chemical makeup. It responds to the user’s body as well, so as a person goes about their day and begins to create kinetic heat, it adjusts and cools down so as not to inadvertently roast the wearer. To reset and recharge the Entropy, simply immerse it in boiling water. This will alter the Phase Change Material and prepare it for the next time.

In terms of how to style this item, if you love taking fashion risks, go ahead and wear it over your clothes like a futuristic gilet. However, the garment is created to be thin enough to fit under your layers or outerwear. This new technology explores the ability to have thermal clothing without relying on electronics. The company plans to expand the piece to kids and a possible cooling version for the sweltering summer months.

The Entropy Vest has yet to be made available for sale, but it has been priced at US$570 on its waiting list.
