SOVN, a Dutch healthcare startup, has developed an earbud solution for bruxism (teeth grinding) that uses AI-driven microsensors to identify when you start grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw without affecting your sleep.
It simply works by using a pair of earbuds with microsensors that detect when you start grinding your teeth, the earbuds then send out gentle vibrations which nudge your subconscious to relax your jaw without waking you up. The earbuds are connected to an app that tracks how long you grind and clench your teeth throughout the night. Alongside your personal data, you can also track the factors that affect your bruxism – environment, diet, lifestyle, mood – to reveal your triggers and equip you with the knowledge to improve them.
SOVN’s purpose is to create comfortable and sleep-compatible earbuds that fit seamlessly with your sleeping routine, with a slim and lightweight design and a long battery life. Although the device is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease, it is solely intended to help users manage their teeth grinding and clenching behaviour.
The company was founded in July 2020 after one of the co-founders, Selina Tirtajana, woke up after yet another poor night’s sleep with a sore jaw and a broken mouth guard. She searched for years for a better solution and found none, so together with partner Gabriel Sáenz, she decided to develop her own.
Combining their experience in medical devices, data engineering and information systems, they assembled a team to create a more intelligent, effective and sleep-compatible solution. Behind SOVN is now a passionate group of scientists, engineers, developers, product designers and marketers on a mission to help people reclaim their rest and live without limits.
