Deputy Climate and Environment Ministers Piotr Dziadzio and Ireneusz Zyska took part in the first day of the VIII DISE Energy Congress of the Lower Silesian Institute of Energy Studies. The event, whose theme is “Energy Security in the Age of Transformation,” took place on September 28 and 29, 2022.
Discussions at the Congress revolved around the challenges facing the energy sector at a time that calls for a revision of energy policy, namely energy security, stable supply chains and strategic actions for the energy transition.
Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, Chief National Geologist Piotr Dziadzio, during his speech inaugurating the Congress, said, “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has made energy security a key element of our lives, and the domestic but also European energy sector is now at a crucial juncture. The main challenges facing countries today are to ensure stable energy supplies to ensure the energy security of their citizens, while keeping prices at socially acceptable levels.”
“Poland has been investing in diversification infrastructure for many years, which will make us independent of supplies from the East, provide wide access to the global LNG market and the deposits of the Norwegian Continental Shelf. This is reflected in the completed investment – the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, but also in the gas connections Poland-Lithuania, Poland-Slovakia, or increasing the regasification capacity of the LNG terminal in Swinoujscie.”
In his inaugural speech opening the Congress, Deputy Minister Dziadzio gave a presentation on “Poland’s path to achieving climate neutrality with stable energy supplies.” He discussed the current market situation in the natural gas and electricity markets and the assumptions for updating PEP2040. He discussed in detail the introductions to PEP2040 – Pillar IV “Energy Sovereignty”, focusing on several areas: development of RES, including the need to develop ground source heat pumps and geothermal, use of existing coal blocks, development of clean coal technologies and support for the development of SMRs.
The panel “Green energy mix as a recipe for energy independence – conditions for further development of RES in Poland, autonomous off-grid areas, aggregation of distributed RES sources” was opened by Deputy Minister Ireneusz Zyska, Government Plenipotentiary for RES.
Deputy Minister Ireneusz Zyska, said, “one of the ways to strengthen energy sovereignty is to develop zero- and low-emission generation sources. In addition to the further development of wind and solar capacities, efforts will be intensified to develop the use of weather-independent RES, i.e. using water, biomass, biogas or ground heat. The last two years have been a time of intensive activities, thanks to which we are witnessing a dynamic development of renewable energy sources in Poland. At the end of July 2022, the state of installed RES capacity exceeded 20.3 GW. For comparison, at the end of 2015 it was about 7 GW.”
